Material Tiers, Yield and Waste

Two colours sitting side by side in the same rack can differ by a factor of three, and none of that difference is visible from across the room. The pricing notes at countertop installers redding aedreams look at the stone itself, because a Redding countertop budget is set mostly by which shelf of the yard you shop from.
Tiers Are a Buying Decision, Not a Quality One

Yards group material into price groups based on what it costs them to land it: quarry of origin, rarity of the pattern, freight, and how many pieces they can buy at once. A group five granite is not five times stronger than a group one. It is rarer, or heavier to ship, or currently fashionable. Knowing that makes it much easier to shop the lower groups without feeling short changed.
Yield Is the Hidden Number

You are charged for the material used, but a kitchen rarely nests neatly into a rectangle. Cutting an L shaped run, an island and a return out of one slab leaves offcuts that cannot be sold. Some shops charge the square foot actually installed and absorb the loss into their rate. Others charge what they had to buy. On a heavily veined pattern where pieces must be matched, the second approach can add a whole extra piece.
Where a Remnant Helps
A remnant is the usable leftover from somebody else's job, and for a small vanity, a laundry top or a bar it is often half price or less. It comes with no guarantee of a matching second piece, so it suits a standalone surface rather than part of a run. Ask the yard what is on the remnant rack before pricing a small area at full rate.
Labour Does Not Scale With Price
The templating visit, the fabrication time, the polishing and the install day cost roughly the same whether the material is cheap or exotic. That is why the gap between an entry level quartz and a mid tier one shrinks once you look at the total rather than the per square foot figure, and why upgrading the stone is often better value than people assume.
What Moves the Number Most
In rough order: the material group, the total square footage, the linear feet of upgraded edge profile, the number of cutouts, whether tear out and disposal are included, and access to the kitchen. A quote that itemises those six is comparable to another quote that itemises the same six, and to nothing else.
