Fresh: How to Compare Two Countertop Bids

Sink and Cooktop Cutouts, and What They Cost

Contemporary kitchen design featuring granite countertops, dark wooden cabinets, and stainless steel appliances.

Every hole in a worktop is a separate line on the quote and a separate chance for something to go wrong. The fabrication notes at countertop installers redding aedreams treat cutouts on their own, because a Redding countertop bid that reads as cheap is often one that quietly excluded them.

The Sink Decides More Than You Think

An undermount sink is polished on the exposed inside edge of the opening and mounted from below, which is the reason it costs more than a drop in. A farmhouse sink is a different job again: the cabinet is modified, the sink is set first, and the material is cut to sit around it with a tight reveal. In all three cases the actual fixture has to be at the house before templating, not on order.

Cooktops and Downdrafts

A cooktop cutout is made to the manufacturer's drawing, and the drawing is not always right. Good shops verify against the appliance itself. Where a downdraft unit sits behind the burners the opening becomes larger and closer to the back edge, which leaves a narrower strip of material and changes where a seam can safely fall.

How They Are Priced

Some quotes include one standard cutout and charge for everything after. Some price every opening. Faucet holes, a soap dispenser, an air switch for the disposal and a filtered water tap are each drilled, and each may or may not be in the number you were given. This is the single most common source of the gap between two bids on the same kitchen.

Why Corners Matter

Every opening is a weak point, and stone fails from the corners of one. A properly made cutout has radiused corners rather than sharp internal angles, and the underside is often reinforced with a rodded steel bar or a strip of composite across the narrow front rail. A square cornered cutout in a hard material is a crack in slow motion.

Changing Your Mind Later

Once the slab is cut, the opening is permanent. Swapping a sink afterwards for one a few millimetres different means either a visible mismatch or a new piece of material. Decide the fixtures, buy them, and have them sitting in the room on template day, and most of this page stops being a risk.
