Fresh: How to Compare Two Countertop Bids

Sealing and Everyday Care, Without the Mythology

Sealing is the subject most often oversold at the point of purchase and most often ignored afterwards. The care notes at countertop installers redding aedreams try to settle it plainly, because a Redding countertop owner is generally told either that sealing is critical every year or that it is never needed at all.

What a Sealer Does

Elegant kitchen featuring dark wooden cabinets, granite countertops, and stainless steel appliances in a contemporary setting.

An impregnating sealer soaks into the pores of a natural stone and leaves a repellent film below the surface. It does not coat the top and it does not make anything scratch proof. What it buys is time: a spill sits on the surface long enough to be wiped instead of soaking in. That is the whole mechanism, and it is worth knowing before paying for a premium upgrade at signing.

The Water Test

Pour a small puddle of water on the surface and leave it for twenty minutes. If the material darkens underneath, it is absorbing and wants sealing. If the puddle sits and the area dries clean, it does not. Do this once a year in the busiest spot, usually beside the sink, and stop guessing from a schedule somebody made up.

Who Needs It and Who Does Not

Most granite benefits, some dense varieties barely at all. Marble and softer quartzite absolutely do, and will still etch, which is a chemical burn from acid rather than a stain and no sealer prevents it. Engineered quartz is non porous and never needs sealing, and a company charging to reseal it annually is selling you nothing.

What Actually Damages a Surface

Heat on resin based material. Acid on anything calcareous, so lemon, vinegar and some cleaning products. Abrasive powders on a polished finish. Standing water at an unsealed joint or against failing caulk around a sink. Cutting directly on the surface is bad for the knife long before it troubles the stone.

The Boring Routine That Works

Warm water, a soft cloth, and a pH neutral cleaner. Wipe spills rather than letting them dry. Use a trivet out of habit rather than judgement. Recaulk the joint at the backsplash when it discolours instead of scrubbing it. That is the entire maintenance programme for almost every material sold in this trade.
